The new BMW 7 Series has a different kind of presence. An illuminated kidney grille, slimmer horizontal lighting signatures and a newly designed BMW badge give the flagship sedan a sharper, more assertive look. It’s a bold new chapter for a car that has always taken luxury seriously.
We traveled to The Resort at Pelican Hill to spend time with the new 7 Series, approaching it less as journalists than as potential owners. Our test car was the BMW 740 xDrive, finished in BMW Individual Frozen Purple metallic and equipped with the M Sport Package Pro. The color alone makes a persuasive case for stepping outside the usual executive-car palette.
The M Sport treatment adds black exterior detailing, sculpted bumpers, a rear diffuser and 20-inch M aerodynamic wheels. Dark Blue metallic brake callipers and a dynamic light carpet complete the package. The effect is sporting without sacrificing the car’s underlying elegance.
The 2027 BMW 7 Series introduces the design and technology of BMW’s Neue Klasse to its flagship sedan. At the front, the illuminated kidney grille and two-section headlight arrangement create a distinctive new signature. Along the sides, a precise character line emphasizes the car’s length, lending the rear three-quarter view an almost boat-tail-like elegance.
With a more confident design, it is still unmistakably BMW. It looks ahead without losing sight of what a luxury sedan should be.
Inside, the atmosphere is quieter. Open-pore wood, carefully considered textures and crystal-glass seat controls bring tactile detail to a technology-led cabin. The new BMW Panoramic iDrive system rethinks the relationship between driver and display, while a standard 14.6-inch passenger screen adds another dimension to the experience.
Our test car featured the optional Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound System, with up to 36 speakers and 1,925 watts of amplifier output. It’s a serious audio setup, integrated into the cabin with the same attention to detail as the rest of the interior. On a long drive, that matters.
The 2027 7 Series range spans all-electric i7 models and combustion-powered 740 and 740 xDrive variants, with a plug-in hybrid and a V8-powered M Performance model planned for later. The appeal is choice: different approaches to power, united by the same emphasis on comfort, technology and presence.
Around Newport and out on the desert roads, the 740 xDrive was a pleasure to drive. It felt composed and comfortable, with enough responsiveness to make a winding stretch of road as enjoyable as an easy cruise.
The new 7 Series may be bolder in appearance and more ambitious in its technology, but its greatest achievement is simpler. It makes the journey feel like part of the destination.
The all-electric BMW i7 is next. We’ll be spending more time with it soon.
Luxury doesn’t have to play it safe.
