From its London studio, Volvo has unveiled the 2028 XC90, a long-range plug-in hybrid SUV that significantly extends the model’s electric capability. The new XC90 can travel more than twice as far on electric power as the existing plug-in hybrid variants, thanks to a larger floor-integrated battery and a more powerful electric motor. When additional range is needed, the gasoline engine takes over seamlessly. A mild-hybrid version is also available.

“The XC60 is our best-selling model of all time, while the XC90 marked the beginning of our premium journey,” says Håkan Samuelsson, President and CEO of Volvo Cars. “Now, as long-range plug-in hybrids, they build on those legacies and, together with the all-electric EX60, give us our strongest-ever electrified offering in the mid-size SUV segment. This means a path to full electrification for every customer.”

The appeal of the long-range XC90 is its flexibility. Everyday journeys can be handled on electric power, while the gasoline engine is ready to step in for longer trips. It is a familiar idea, refined for a much greater electric range.

The XC90 has earned its reputation as one of the most accomplished premium family SUVs, establishing a distinctive combination of safety, comfort and restrained Scandinavian design. Building on recent technology and design updates, the seven-seat SUV continues Volvo’s long-standing approach to safety while making the cabin an increasingly considered place to spend time.

Inside, the XC90 is designed less as a conventional car interior than as a space for travelling well. Natural light, premium materials and smooth wood details bring a distinctly Scandinavian sense of calm, while the generous cabin is designed to make longer journeys feel more relaxed and restorative.

The optional Bowers & Wilkins premium sound system turns the cabin into an immersive listening environment, while Google Gemini brings a new generation of AI-powered assistance to the XC90. Like all new Volvo cars, the XC90 will also benefit from regular over-the-air software updates, allowing the vehicle to evolve long after it leaves the showroom.

The new XC90 T8 AWD Long Range Plug-in Hybrid is scheduled to enter production later this fall, with customer deliveries expected to begin in early 2027.
