As part of Monterey Car Week 2026, Rolls-Royce invited us to its private Villa to be among the first to see the one-of-one Black Badge Ghost Golden Era. Created for a North American client, the commission celebrates more than a century of Rolls-Royce V12 excellence, translating that engineering legacy into gold, craftsmanship, and a remarkable amount of detail.
Golden Era is what happens when a fascination with an engine becomes the starting point for an entire design.
The exterior is finished in Gold Crystal over Black, with gold-infused paint that catches the light with a subtle sparkle. A hand-painted “V12” coachline runs the length of the motor car, joined by gold Bonneville lines and gold-painted bumper inserts.
Inside, things get even more interesting. Embroidered V12 artwork appears across the seats, door pockets and rear center armrest. The rear interior panel features, for the first time on a Rolls-Royce motor car, a finely embroidered technical illustration showing the internal architecture of a Rolls-Royce V12 engine.
There’s gold in the Technical Fibre veneer, too—microscopic flakes suspended beneath the lacquer—and throughout the cabin in the brightwork, engraved eyeball vents and the Golden Era Illuminated Fascia. A gold-inlaid ashtray, a Starlight Headliner scattered with gold shooting stars and a gold engine plaque honoring the current Rolls-Royce V12 finish the story.
It’s a lot of gold, but remarkably, it doesn’t feel loud. The details are there to celebrate the machine underneath it all.
This is where Rolls-Royce Bespoke gets particularly interesting. Clients are increasingly using commissions to explore personal passions, family histories, artistic ideas and, in this case, the engineering heritage of the marque itself.
Golden Era doesn’t simply customize a Ghost. It takes one very specific idea—the V12—and follows it all the way through the car.
And perhaps that is the real appeal of Bespoke at this level. The possibilities are less about what you can choose from a menu and more about what you can imagine.
At the Rolls-Royce Villa during Monterey Car Week, surrounded by some of the world’s most significant automobiles, Golden Era felt right at home. It is both a celebration of the V12 and a reminder of what happens when a client is given the freedom to take an idea as far as it can go.
