Not long after introducing the mid-engined Valhalla Coupe, Aston Martin has taken the roof off its latest supercar. Meet the Valhalla Spider, an open-cockpit interpretation of the hybrid performance machine that promises something rather unusual: all the excitement of open-air driving without compromising its extraordinary capabilities. With a top speed of 217 mph, it is also the fastest open-cockpit Aston Martin ever built.
The Spider retains the Valhalla’s striking proportions and carbon-fibre architecture, but introduces a removable, stowable fabric roof for those who prefer a little sunshine with their speed. An optional carbon-fibre hardtop provides another choice. With the fabric roof fitted, maximum speed is limited to 124 mph; with the hardtop in place or the roof removed entirely, the Spider can reach its full 217 mph.
Underneath, the Spider retains the formidable plug-in hybrid powertrain: a bespoke 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 paired with three electric motors, producing a combined 1,079 PS and 1,100 Nm of torque. An eight-speed dual-clutch transmission sends power to all four wheels, with acceleration from 0 to 62 mph taking just 2.5 seconds. The combination of combustion and electric power is already an impressive proposition in the coupe. With the roof removed, the V8’s soundtrack should become an even more compelling part of the experience.
Getting the aerodynamics right was clearly a priority. Aston Martin developed a bespoke wind deflector to manage airflow through the open cockpit, directing cooling air toward the engine intake while lifting turbulent air over the occupants. The rear snorkel has also been redesigned, sitting 35mm taller than the coupe’s version. Revised active aerodynamics and stability control calibrations account for both roof-on and roof-off driving, maintaining the car’s balance and stability at speed.
There are thoughtful changes elsewhere, too. A new carbon-fibre Touring Seat comes standard, offering greater comfort and easier entry and exit, although buyers can retain the coupe’s original carbon-fibre seat at no additional cost. The signature carbon-fibre dihedral doors remain, preserving one of the Valhalla’s most distinctive design features. They have been refined for smoother operation and now feature frameless glass, with a subtle change to the upper curve of the door glass improving access when the roof is fitted.
Aston Martin CEO Adrian Hallmark sees the Spider as a natural extension of what the coupe established:
“Valhalla Coupe broke so much new ground. Our first production mid-engined supercar. Our first plug-in hybrid. The first to feature our bespoke flat-plane-crank V8 engine and the first to use our all-new 8-speed Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT). It also pioneered a fresh design language and achieved a unique blend of exemplary on-road feel and engagement matched by extraordinary on-track capability.
“Valhalla Spider builds on those impressive ‘firsts’, preserving the aesthetic beauty and dynamic bandwidth of Valhalla Coupe while introducing the expanded opportunities for enjoyment and engagement that can only be found in an open-cockpit supercar. High speed or low speed. Rain or shine. Roof on or roof off. Road or track. Valhalla Spider ticks every box.”
First customer deliveries are scheduled to begin in the third quarter of 2027.
