New York has seen its share of high-profile premieres, but Jaguar’s arrival in West Chelsea was something else entirely. We were there as the marque introduced Type 01, turning the city into a stage for its next chapter. From large-scale digital displays in Times Square, DUMBO and the Lower East Side to an evening gathering at STORIED, the premiere unfolded across the city before coming together in a setting with its own creative history: the former home and studio of photographer Annie Leibovitz.
Type 01 makes its statement through proportion. A low roofline, long bonnet, sleek silhouette and dramatic stance give the car an unmistakable presence. Its design looks back to landmark Jaguars, including the E-type and XJS, while moving in a distinctly different direction. There is restraint in the surfaces, but nothing timid about the overall effect.
Beneath that sculptural exterior sits Jaguar’s bespoke electric architecture, delivering more than 1,000 PS. An 850-volt electrical system underpins the performance, with a stated 400-mile EPA range and the ability to add 200 miles in 13 minutes using a 350 kW charger. The figures are formidable, but the larger proposition is a luxury grand tourer in which electric performance and visual drama are given equal weight.
The New York premiere also introduced actor Florence Pugh as the first brand ambassador of this new Jaguar era.
The evening brought together guests from across art, fashion, film and music, with British singer-songwriter Sienna Spiro performing an intimate set and chef Roze Traoré creating a menu for the occasion. The setting and guest list reflected Jaguar’s ambition to place the car within a wider conversation about contemporary culture and design.
That ambition is most clearly expressed in Type 01 itself. Conceived as a four-door electric grand tourer, it departs from familiar expectations of what an electric luxury car should look like. The long bonnet, short front overhang, extended rear and 23-inch wheels establish a powerful visual rhythm, while the overall silhouette feels deliberately removed from the conventions of the segment.
Inside, a central spine runs the length of the cabin, establishing distinct spaces for each occupant. Brass-inspired details follow the same front-to-back line, reinforcing the architecture of the interior. Ahead of the driver, a 24-inch glass OLED display integrates the instrument interface and infotainment system, while a separate seven-inch touchscreen places frequently used controls within easy reach. A full-width panoramic soundbar and sensory audio seats extend the cabin’s emphasis on immersive experience.
Type 01 marks a consequential moment for Jaguar. The challenge now is to translate this striking design direction into a car that delivers on its promise on the road. In New York, at least, the marque made its intentions unmistakable: this is a Jaguar prepared to leave convention behind without abandoning the presence that made its name.
