There has always been something particularly appealing about the 911 Carrera GTS. It sits close to the sweet spot of the range: serious performance without sacrificing the everyday character that makes the 911 so enduring.
For the latest Carrera GTS, Porsche has changed the equation with its T-Hybrid system, bringing electrified performance to the 911.
The result is not a 911 softened by electrification. Quite the opposite. The system is designed around performance, adding electric assistance while keeping additional weight remarkably low.
With Launch Control, the 911 Carrera GTS Coupé reaches 100 km/h in just 3.0 seconds and has a top speed of 312 km/h.
At the heart of the system is a newly developed 3.6-liter boxer engine paired with an electrically driven turbocharger and an electric motor integrated into the eight-speed PDK transmission. The electric turbocharger builds boost quickly, improving throttle response while allowing Porsche to use a single turbocharger where the previous GTS used two.
The turbocharger can also function as a generator, recovering energy from the exhaust-gas stream. A compact high-voltage battery stores that energy, while an electrically powered air-conditioning compressor eliminates the need for a conventional belt drive and helps keep the engine compact.
It is a typically Porsche approach to hybrid technology: less about simply adding efficiency and more about finding another way to make the car faster and more responsive.
The chassis has evolved alongside the powertrain. Rear-axle steering is now standard on the Carrera GTS, improving high-speed stability while reducing the turning circle at lower speeds. Aerodynamics have also been revised, while the characteristic four-point LED Matrix headlights now incorporate light functions that were previously positioned separately in the front fascia.
Inside, Porsche keeps the emphasis where it belongs. The Porsche Driver Experience places key functions within easy reach, including the drive-mode selector, updated assistance controls and, for the first time in a 911, a start button positioned to the left of the steering wheel.
The new Carrera GTS is a technological step forward, but it remains recognizably a 911. That may be the more interesting part.
Porsche has taken an icon that has evolved generation after generation and introduced hybrid technology without changing the fundamental proposition: compact, fast, beautifully engineered and built around the driver.
The 911 is still the 911. It just has another trick up its sleeve.
