Mercedes-Benz G580 With EQ Technology

An Electric G-Wagon That Still Feels Like a G-Wagon

The question surrounding the Mercedes-Benz G580 with EQ Technology isn’t whether it’s quick or luxurious. Those expectations are already a given. The real question is far simpler: can an all-electric G-Wagon still feel like a G-Wagon?

After spending time behind the wheel, the answer is an emphatic yes.

From the moment you climb into its upright cabin and look across the unmistakable flat hood, the G580 feels instantly familiar. The commanding driving position, unmistakable proportions, and reassuring sense of solidity haven’t changed. Mercedes-Benz has embraced electrification without losing the character that has made the G-Class one of the world’s most recognizable luxury SUVs.

Performance certainly isn’t in question. Four independently controlled electric motors produce a combined 579 horsepower and an incredible 859 lb-ft of torque, sending the G580 from 0-60 mph in just 4.6 seconds. The acceleration is immediate, smooth, and almost effortless, yet it never feels disconnected from the vehicle’s rugged personality. Instead, the instant torque gives the G-Wagon an entirely new way to express its capability.

Our test vehicle arrived in MANUFAKTUR Moonlight White Metallic, a beautiful multi-layer finish that transforms in changing light. Bright sunshine reveals an impressive metallic depth, while the Night Package adds just enough contrast with black exterior accents, tinted indicator lenses and distinctive 20-inch AMG wheels. The result is unmistakably modern without losing the timeless presence that defines every G-Class.

The Electric Evolution of an Icon

Inside, the cabin blends handcrafted luxury with the latest Mercedes-Benz technology. The MBUX infotainment system, Nappa leather multifunction steering wheel, Burmester 3D Surround Sound system, KEYLESS-GO and 64-color ambient lighting create an environment that feels every bit as premium as expected. For those who venture beyond the pavement, the Transparent Hood function, redesigned off-road control center, and new OFFROAD COCKPIT reinforce that this remains a genuine off-road vehicle rather than simply a luxury SUV with rugged styling.

Living with the G580 also introduces one of the most satisfying aspects of electric driving. Its regenerative braking system captures energy whenever you lift off the accelerator or apply the brakes, returning power to the high-voltage battery. Five selectable recuperation levels, controlled by the steering wheel paddles, allow you to tailor the driving experience, from relaxed coasting to a more engaging one-pedal feel.

Perhaps the biggest achievement is what Mercedes-Benz chose not to change. The G580 still turns heads everywhere it goes. It still feels substantial, confident, and engineered to go almost anywhere. Some longtime G63 owners may miss the soundtrack of the V8, but the electric drivetrain never feels like a compromise. Instead, it introduces a new layer of refinement while preserving everything that has made the G-Wagon an icon for more than four decades.

The Mercedes-Benz G580 with EQ Technology proves that electrification doesn’t have to redefine an icon. It simply offers another way to experience one of the world’s most capable, luxurious and instantly recognizable SUVs—one that remains, at its core, every bit a G-Wagon.

Let’s Build One.
