Some photographs record a moment, and photographs that seem to preserve one. Irving Penn belonged to the latter.
From 30 September, the Maison Européenne de la Photographie presents PENN & FASHION, an exhibition tracing Penn’s career from 1947 to 2008, with fashion at its center. His photographs for Vogue helped define the visual language of twentieth-century fashion, but Penn’s practice extended far beyond it—to portraiture, still life, nudes, and the quiet observation of ordinary things.
Penn was famously private and intensely serious about his work. He approached photography less as a means of recording the world than as a way of distilling it. The studio became a place of extraordinary concentration: remove what was unnecessary, find the essential form, make the photograph hold.

That seriousness extended to the photograph itself. Beginning in the 1960s, Penn immersed himself in the revival of nineteenth-century platinum and palladium printing, developing painstaking processes that gave him greater control over tone, surface, and permanence. The print was not simply the end of the photograph. It was part of the work.
It is tempting, now, to think of photography as something instantaneous and endlessly replaceable. Penn reminds us of another possibility: the photograph as an object, a record of a particular time, transformed by the eye and discipline of a master.
