Our road trip through the Yucatan filled us with awe and wonder after visiting the ancient sites of the Mayan civilization. Each new road led us on an adventure of discovery, mystery, and marvel as we passed micro villages, fishing villages, bio-diverse nature preserves, bays full of flamingos, and farmlands, all under an endless blue sky. We loved visiting attractions and overnighting along the way but we wanted to slow down even more and indulge ourselves with a bit of luxury, fun, and calm. We arrived at the Seahorse Hotel, Telchac at early dusk as the shadows from the palm trees filled the compound with a cooling shade. We were kindly led into a large airy palapa, the reception area, and greeted with kindness and warmth. As we were ushered into the modern whitewashed building, the pool, the sandy beach, hammocks, and shaded lounge chairs all looked so inviting.
The modern rooms were an utter surprise. Adorned with traditional Yucatan crafts and colors the guestrooms are statement-making in their modernist approach and simplicity. There are only 12 rooms at the Seahorse. Rooms face the tropical garden compound or the Gulf of Mexico, with some rooms featuring steps directly to the sandy shore. With the diminutive size of the Seahorse, everyone becomes friends pretty quickly. We were able to catch the last bit of daylight enjoying cocktails before our dinner at the poolside open-air restaurant. Dinner was so delicious we started anticipating breakfast before we were done eating.
Granted that might have been the tequila talking…our quiet evening was punctuated by laughs and smiles from the kind staff on hand.
Things really do slow down in the Yucatan and yet our day at the Seahorse went quickly. After and delightful Mexican breakfast we went Kayaking, followed by time on the emerald beach and poolside book reading, (remember that Endeavour?). Later a bike ride before dinner would peak our thirst and hunger. The next day we did all again feeling more relaxed than we could remember.
Of course, great food, handsome rooms, and a stellar location are not what made our stay at the Seahorse most memorable. It was the hospitality and warmth of the staff that made the trip delightful. Ever at the ready to fetch kayaks for us or to bring cocktails to our hammocks the staff made us feel like we were welcomed to their home. The Seahorse is a great me-time intermission from a busy life and it offers a modern, unique, fun-in-the-sun, way to experience another of the Yucatan’s finest traditions, warm and welcoming hospitality.
