Some places draw you back. Set in the foothills of Morocco’s Atlas Mountains, Kasbah Tamadot is one of them. Years after my first visit, I returned to find the celebrated retreat refreshed and expanded, its familiar character intact, with new riads and a second restaurant adding to the experience.
Part of Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin Limited Edition collection, Kasbah Tamadot has a character that extends beyond its extraordinary setting. Moroccan craftsmanship is woven throughout the property, from intricate architectural details to individually designed interiors. The relationship with the surrounding Berber communities is equally integral to the experience, supported by a local team and the work of The Eve Branson Foundation, which champions education, artisanal skills and opportunities for local families.
Accommodation ranges from intimate rooms and suites to luxury Berber tents and private riads. The latter offer a particularly compelling way to experience the property, with private pools, generous terraces and views stretching towards Mount Toubkal. Gardens, quiet corners and the ever-present mountains give the retreat a sense of seclusion, while the culture and everyday life of the High Atlas remain close at hand.
There is more to discover beyond the views. Guided mountain walks lead into the surrounding landscape, while visits to nearby villages offer a glimpse of Berber life and traditions. Guests can explore local crafts, take part in Moroccan cooking experiences or settle in for an open-air film beneath the stars. An infinity pool set against the mountains provides its own reason to linger.
Dining unfolds across two restaurants, Kanoun and Asayss, where Moroccan flavours meet a broader international sensibility. Yet it was the Asounfou Spa that left the strongest impression on me.
The traditional Moroccan hammam is an experience worth making time for. Moving through a sequence of warm, steamy rooms, the ritual centres on cleansing, renewal and the use of traditional Moroccan black soap. It is an ancient bathing tradition that feels entirely at home here, offering something more meaningful than a conventional spa treatment: a moment of connection with the culture of the place.
At Kasbah Tamadot, luxury is not simply a matter of spectacular views or beautifully appointed rooms. It is in the details, the warmth of the hospitality and the feeling of being somewhere with a distinct identity. The mountains provide the setting. Morocco gives it its soul. Let’s book it.
