The Grand Dame Of The Riviera Still Reigns In Spectacular Style

Needless to say, the glamorous allure of the French Riviera remains legendary. From the cinematic curve of the Promenade des Anglais to the hilltop villages and glittering harbors of the Côte d’Azur, this stretch of Mediterranean coastline continues to seduce travelers with a singular blend of old-world grandeur and contemporary sophistication. At the center of that mythology stands Le Negresco — a hotel that has evolved from Belle Époque fantasy into one of the Riviera’s most enduring cultural landmarks.

Opened in 1913 by visionary hotelier Henri Negresco, the palace hotel was conceived as an opulent retreat for royalty, aristocrats, artists, and the international elite. Crowned by its unmistakable pink dome designed by architect Édouard-Jean Niermans, the landmark façade still presides majestically over the Mediterranean. More than a century later, Le Negresco feels less like a traditional luxury hotel and more like a living theatrical stage set where history, art, gastronomy, and Riviera mythology continue to unfold in dazzling fashion.

The hotel’s legendary interiors remain among the most extraordinary in Europe. Beneath the soaring glass rotunda of the Royal Lounge hangs the celebrated Baccarat chandelier originally commissioned for Czar Nicholas II — a glittering centerpiece that perfectly captures the hotel’s unapologetic sense of drama. Throughout the property, guests move through salons layered with centuries of French decorative arts, museum-quality portraits, sculptures, antique furnishings, and contemporary works amassed through the passionate vision of Jeanne Augier, the hotel’s late owner and guardian spirit.

And yet Le Negresco never feels frozen in time.

That is its magic.

Le Negresco, Nice

The hotel’s celebrated fine dining restaurant, Le Chantecler, continues to rank among the defining gastronomic experiences on the Côte d’Azur. Today, the kitchen is under the direction of acclaimed French chef Virginie Basselot, one of the very few women to earn the prestigious Meilleur Ouvrier de France distinction. Since taking over the culinary direction of the hotel in 2018, Basselot has infused Le Chantecler with a lighter, more contemporary Mediterranean sensibility while honoring the restaurant’s rich Michelin-starred heritage.

Her cuisine celebrates seasonality, regional artisans, Riviera seafood, and elegant precision rather than unnecessary excess. Delicate sauces, crystalline flavors, and beautifully restrained presentations allow the ingredients to speak with remarkable clarity. Dining here remains ceremonious in the very best sense: polished silver, synchronized service, exceptional wine pairings, and an atmosphere that feels entirely transportive.

The famed dining room itself remains one of the Riviera’s great interiors — a lavish Regency-inspired salon wrapped in romantic pinks, ornate moldings, and softly glowing light. It is impossible not to feel the continuity of decades of grand European dining culture while seated there.

Meanwhile, La Rotonde continues to provide one of the most visually charming dining spaces in Nice. Inspired by an 18th-century carousel, the whimsical brasserie is filled with painted horses, carnival details, striped ceilings, and plush seating that somehow balances fantasy with Riviera chic. Under Basselot’s culinary direction, the menu embraces refined Mediterranean comfort cuisine with an emphasis on local ingredients and Niçoise traditions.

For cocktails, Le Relais Bar remains gloriously atmospheric, wrapped in historic walnut wood paneling dating back to 1913. Live music, classic cocktails, and old Riviera glamour make it one of those increasingly rare hotel bars where time appears delightfully suspended.

Inside The Timeless World Of Le Negresco

The property continues to evolve while fiercely preserving its identity. The juxtaposition of aristocratic grandeur with playful eccentricity gives the hotel an energy that feels distinctly modern. Uniformed bellmen in plumed hats welcome guests with equal warmth whether arriving in couture, linen resort wear, or beach sandals fresh from the sea. The atmosphere remains formal without ever becoming stiff — glamorous without losing its humanity.

The accommodations themselves are wonderfully individualistic. No two rooms are alike among the hotel’s suites and guest rooms, each layered with distinctive palettes, historical references, antiques, custom fabrics, and contemporary comforts. Some lean heavily into Louis XV romanticism, while others embrace a more restrained Riviera elegance. Everywhere, art and storytelling remain central.

Beyond the hotel itself, Nice has undergone a remarkable culinary renaissance in recent years. A younger generation of chefs has reinvigorated the city with inventive bistros, natural wine bars, and contemporary interpretations of traditional Cuisine Nissarde. Even amid this vibrant evolution, Le Negresco remains the symbolic heart of Riviera hospitality — not simply because of its history, but because it continues to move forward with confidence and style.

We attended Le Negresco’s centennial celebrations years ago, but returning now, the hotel feels more relevant than ever. In an era where many luxury properties chase minimalism and international sameness, Le Negresco stands apart by embracing personality, theatricality, and unapologetic French grandeur.

There is only one Negresco.

And on the French Riviera, that still means everything.
