How do you update a legend without losing the qualities that made it one in the first place? When you’re Mercedes-Benz and it’s time to reinvent the iconic G-Class sport-utility, you start by taking a page from your own history, while keeping focus firmly on the future. This delicate balance is what makes the 2019 Mercedes G-Class one of the world’s most desirable and powerful SUVs. It’s true to the original, which began life as a go-anywhere military vehicle in the late-1970s, but now has red carpet-levels of refinement and panache.
The straight edges, exposed door hinges and blunt face of the classic G-Class remain intact; though LED-ringed headlights, a wider track for more interior room, redesigned suspension and gorgeous 22-inch alloy wheels give this Mercedes a subtle reboot. If a car company could design a vehicle to look like a rugged NFL linebacker in a perfectly tailored tuxedo or working the best from Philipp Plein, the result would be the new Mercedes G-Class.
The Mercedes-AMG G63, which had it’s debut at this year’s Geneva Motor Show, adds more power and charisma to this already potent mix. Chrome bars in the front grille echo the design found on the Mercedes-AMG GT supercar, while a 577-horsepower twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 gives the G63 the performance of one, too. Mercedes estimates the G63 needs only 4.4 seconds to accelerate from 0 to 60 miles per hour. Top speed climbs to 149 mph, when equipped with the optional AMG Driver’s Package.
Inside, the G63 is unrecognizable from the previous G-Class. A pair of 12.3-inch screens on the dashboard relay all the information a driver might need with cool, crisp clarity. Soft leather seating, turbine-like air vents, and a heavily-sculpted AMG Performance steering wheel impart a feeling of exclusivity and adventure in this one-of-a-kind performance SUV.
