Amply powerful, exaggerated and over puffed outerwear nearly stole the show in the Louis Vuitton FW 2019 collection. In his second collection for the house of Vuitton, designer Virgil Abloh pumped up the volume thought out the collection. Trouser legs, Zoot suit jackets, shearling coats, trench coats, scarves, bags and the most masculine pleated man-skirts we seen, went beyond far beyond economy. Puffer coats are inflated, bag to match, cocoon coats enwrapped, trench coats draped and the logo etch shearing went far below the knee. The excess was anything but excessive. Complimenting and redefining silhouettes, without being abrupt, the extra layers and extra volume further announced Abloh’s varied influences. From street style to iconic style of Michael Jackson, and the Wizard of Oz to Hip-Hop culture, the designer’s vocabulary is at the forefront of a changing tide in fashion formality. Lines are blurry; ‘classic suits’ are resized and reworked to be statement making and street wear is stamped with designer logos
Abloh’s cross body harnesses, explored in his previous LV collection, morph into padded sashes complete with embroidered padded ‘badges,’ that nod to Michael Jackson’s obsession with uniforms and military style dressing. Other references to Jackson include the designer’s use of bright red, regal purples and a t-shirt with Jackson’s dancing feet printed on the front. ‘We Are The World’ colorful flag prints in the collection are graphic references to universality of style and a global perspective on unity, and of course, global commerce.
