Simply stated, the imposingly designed 2020 Shelby GT’s 760hp of controlled chaos will have seasoned and enthusiasts drivers in awe and disbelief after track testing this beast. This new Mustang Shelby GT will impress the hardest driving 911 owners and Mustang disciples equally with its power, speed, engineering, and style. While Mustang owners and muscle car lovers have been waiting for this GT500 the owners of German, Italian and British speed-machine owners are looking at this new American Supercar with a revelatory eye. After driving this American beauty outside of Las Vegas I am sure this car will be collected and be the most exciting option for a daily commute available today.
As the most powerful street-legal Ford ever built, this all-new Mustang Shelby GT500 will have your eyes spinning at the levels of performance. Its first-in-class 7-speed dual-clutch transmission, race-bred control strategies, and advanced drive modes deliver a car that performs unlike any other sports coupe made in the US, as well as a few that make their way across the pond. Its crazy 760-horsepower 5.2-liter V8 engine is the most power and torque dense supercharged V8 in the world. With 625 ft.-lb. of torque funneled through a Tremec® TR-9070 DCT 7-speed dual-clutch transmission, the Shelby GT500 achieves a 0-100-0 yes to 100 in 10.6 seconds, thanks also to the largest front brakes and available carbon fiber wheels, each wrapped in a Ford Performance-spec Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tire.
Beyond the raw power and ultra-fast shifts, advanced control systems that optimize the capabilities of the chassis and power train to create distinct drive modes to get the maximum performance from every aspect of the Shelby GT500 performance hardware – very impressive indeed!
“The range of brute-force drag acceleration, seamless road shifts and amazingly smooth shifts on the track further highlights how the soul of the Shelby GT500 is elevated in our most advanced Mustang ever,” said Ed Krenz, Ford Performance chief program engineer. “Effortlessly handling the 760 horsepower is our segment-first Tremec dual-clutch transmission, with an advanced control system that enhances GT500’s five drive modes to deliver a driving experience once reserved only for exotic supercars.”
Walking up to this new GT500 you see that the Ford Performance engineers and designers have crafted an aggressive and functional aerodynamic design, inspired by the design of fighter jets. This painstaking design not only enhances performance and on-track capability, it truly conveys the look of a 700-plus-horsepower supercar standing still.
A new front fascia, hood, and fenders accommodate the significant power increase of the 5.2-liter supercharged V8 engine. Angular grille openings are twice as large as those on the Shelby GT350 and increase cooling pack airflow by 50 percent. A muscular hood with a massive 31×28-inch louvered vent totaling 6.03 square feet quickly extracts air for reduced front down force and track-capable thermal management.
Once inside the Shelby GT500, you fall for its race-inspired premium materials and unique finishes worthy of its 760hp. Our test car had the available exposed carbon fiber instrument panel appliqué and new door panel inserts in suede with accent stitching. Recaro racing seats with firm side bolstering and pass-through for safety harnesses are also available and give a driver the highest level of performance.
The all-new Shelby GT500 picks up a 12-inch full-color LCD instrument cluster, while a high-performance custom-tuned 12-speaker B&O® Play premium audio system is available. All of this is controlled via an 8-inch SYNC® 3 touch screen featuring SiriusXM and FordPass Connect™.
To make your GT500 an easily handled daily drive five drive modes are easily accessed with a flick of the console-mounted mode switch. This system changes nearly every aspect of our car’s behavior, including ride dampening, stability control, antilock brake modulation, and steering feel.
With a fabulous reputation for transforming Ford Mustang into dominant road racing machines, Carroll Shelby, took his legendary Mustang GT350 model further in 1967 to craft the first-generation Shelby GT500 with a modified 428-cubic-inch V8 inspired by his team’s 1-2-3 finish at Le Mans.
Carroll Shelby called the original Shelby GT500 “the first real car I’m really proud of.” Thanks to the team at Ford Performance, that legacy continues with the third-generation 2020 Mustang Shelby GT500 the most powerful and most advanced Mustang ever. Ford Mustang Shelby GT500
