KIA K5

advanced technology, turbocharged engines

What we don’t like about K5 is having to make a decision on which model we love more, the GT-Line, or the EX. With the reveal of the all-new K5 mid-size sedan, Kia is saying goodbye to Optima and replace it with forward-thinking design that resembles the theme of an Italian sports sedan and offers the performance of road-ready German-made touring four-door.

When Kia started shaking things up with the Stinger the face of the Kia consumer started to skew younger and Kia’s entry-level style and high power tech soon became an eye-opening discovery for customers of all ages. Building on that moment Kia has introduced the K5 a mid-size sedan with fantastic design, all-new safety and performance enhanced “N3” platform, turbocharged engines, available all-wheel drive1, and high-impact technology. Kia is showing off this stunning package of style and substance at a value compared to comparable models from Japan. The K5 is available now in four trim levels LX, LXS, GT-Line, EX with a beyond fast GT to follow later in this fall.

Our test/photos cars are the GT-Line and EX. Each with its a distinct personality and, like a good parent we do not have a favorite. The GT-Line is the sporty-looking of the two with GT-Line bumpers, grille, rear spoiler, LED fog lights and LED taillights, 18-inch alloys with 45-series performance tires, a fabulous interior upgrade, a sport steering wheel and a panoramic sunroof that brings the outside in.

EX or GT-Line

On the EX we find bit more refinement, the 18-inch Machined Gray Alloy Wheels, LED Multi-Reflector Headlights, Panoramic Sunroof w/ LED Interior Lighting, Synthetic Leather Seat Trim, Power Driver’s Seats, Heated and Ventilated Front Seats, and we also had the available Navigation w/ 10.25-inch Display in keeping with the luxury trend.

Both cars are powered by a very capable 1.6-liter turbocharged GDI four-cylinder engine that produces 180 horsepower with an all-new eight-speed automatic transmission that makes either K5 a true driver’s car. With Kia’s new modernized “tiger face,” the wide and thin front grille extending into the headlight and hood structure and low-slung and fastback silhouette is capture by the photos and there is no question that this design elevates these models beyond others in this segment.
