Luxury, and the inherent status of designer wear, is a tenet that continues to allure and seduce a wide spectrum of the stylish masses. In an era marred by an anything-goes-with-anything attitude towards dressing it is enlightening to see the connoisseurship Virgil Abloh brings to his work at Louis Vuitton and his own label Off White. The designer admonished his heavy reliance on using amped up street wear to signify couture in the F/W 2019 woman’s Off White collection. With the exception of a few frayed jeans and sneakers under gowns the designer presented a lovely, feminine and high-tone collection that is forward in proportion, and youthful with refinements
Evidence that modernity in Abloh’s LBD. Of the few in the collection, asymmetrical hems, draping, pleats and prairie style dresses rise above the tried and true. Paired with duster length coats the little black dresses and many other looks in the collection achieve an urban forwardness without sacrificing simple elegance.
A racing theme adds and aerodynamic theme to the op-art patterns and raceway colors in the collection. Hot pink coats, yellow dresses, caution orange coats and pants and primary green accents acknowledge the alter ego of our speed racer, the flashier sister of the classic, white, black and, well, off-white dressier twin.
With more in the collection suitable for power lunches then music videos the Off-White F/W collection is full of ‘now’ pieces.
The checkered flag in racing signifies a win but for Abloh the seemingly forward trajectory continues and it will be exciting to see his steps off the street continue, or regress, with his understanding of the fashion zeitgeist.
