A clever turn by the young French Designer Arthur Avellano, a graduate of the Ecole Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Toulouse, has invigorated a common material often associated with evocative fetish connotations. The designer, winner of the “who’s next ‘Best Graduate Collection’ at the acclaimed Atelier Chardon Savard came to fashion in summation of his many artistic pursuits. For Avellano fashion is total art and the garment a design object. In an industry where everything old becomes new again, the designer’s dedication to latex rises above passé materials dismissed into a world of fetish wear. Working with specialized laboratories the designer has created hypoallergenic and machine washable hybrid latex better suited to couture. His latex is akin to fine leather in weight, texture and the simple beauty of its drape.
In the Arthur Avellano Fall Winter 2019 collection the designer moves further away from fetish inspired wear to familiar sportswear silhouettes, allowing the materials beauty and vibrant colors, to be provocative amid the fine and crisp tailoring. Olive green diamond quilted latex transforms the classic hunting jacket. The diamond quilted latex pink suit, belted at waist and accompanied with full, flowing pink pants, propels the fabric towards androgyny while the quilted black track pants complete the circle to full on masculine wear…which is, itself fetish wear of another kind. The ubiquitous daywear, nightwear tracksuit is refreshing vibrant and alive with light refection in the shiny finished latex. Avellano’s addition of plaids in more punk then posh and his suits look immaculately proper with a contemporary edge.
