Stefano Gabanna and Domenico Dolce hit the jackpot with their Dolce & Gabanna Spring/Summer 2019 Menswear collection.  Filling the runway show audience with influencers, rappers, photographers and celebs and they opened the show with Instagram star Cameron Dallas who attracted the interest of his 20 million followers. Beautiful Monica Bellucci walked the runway in an androgynous black suit and skyscraper heels, as did 53-year-old Dutch former supermodel Marpessa. After over 100 looks came down the runway, ‘gangster’ Naomi Campbell, adorned in a mannish pinstriped suit and fedora, nearly stole the show. “Now it’s time to turn a new page,” said Domenico Dolce backstage to a group of media before the show. “We’ve been exploring sportswear, the new attitude, and learning a lot.”

Dolce & Gabbana energy anew

“And one big thing we have learned,” said Gabbana, “is that what the new generation wants from us most is our classics. The perfectly tailored suits, the tuxedos, the black lace, the silk print dresses—the things we made that excited us 30 years ago are exciting young customers today. They want to make these things that are our own, their own. Really, we don’t work in fashion. Our job is to use the collections to talk about our story, and what we talk about is style.”

The SS19 collection is called DNA Evolution, and when Cameron opened the show in a gilded jacket and crown new a energic freshness was revealed.  Towering dancer Gioacchino Starace wore in a torn hybrid of tutu and basketball shorts. Parody cannoli print short tracksuits, to fish-print linen beachwear and patched military utility pieces had all of us swooning in our seats and enjoying both the designers wink and reverence to Italian style . The ‘models’ had universal appeal, from young to old and from fit to fancy, and the patterns danced melodically and the tailoring contoured perfectly to everyone.  “Like in Il Gattopardo,” said Gabbana, “when Trancredi says, ‘For everything to stay the same, everything must change.’ ”Dolce & Gabbana.
