That Velar

Designed By An Architecture Aficionado

With its linear stance, length accentuating lines and seemingly simple sloping roof the Range Rover Velar projects a powerfully bold presence. The clean lines the define modernism in architecture are inherent in the Velar’s silhouette and throughout the details both inside and outside. The wealth of well-executed design innovations that streamline and economize the door handles, driving controls and the exceptionally chic center console encapsulate distinctive refinement to Range Rovers latest offering. We were introduced to the Velar in Palm Springs California, a town where many homes and commercial buildings were designed by acclaimed modernist architects and their followers. The Velar looked completely at home, albeit at times futuristic, next to the sprawling glass and steel boxy architecture and their aerodynamic desert landscaping. The nearby San Bernardino National Forrest and Joshua Tree National Park provided ample driving challenges, as well as spectacular scenery, for us to experience the Velars off-road performance.

Off-road, with determination, concentration and the Velar’s double-wishbone front suspension and integral link suspension in the rear, we traversed cliffside passages to then negotiate steep ravines, treacherous downhills and hairpin turns though a lot of dirt and sand. With an available four-corner air suspension that offers a maximum clearance of 9.9 inches and a maximum wading depth of 25.6 inches the Velar is Land Rovers most road-oriented model to date and far outpaces the off-road capabilities of most of it rivals.

The Velar’s silhouette is every bit a Range Rover and designed with a rising ‘belt line’ falling roof and pinched tail that is lithe and sculptural. The grille, lights and flush bummer on the Velar’s front announce its presence. Its details revel it refinements. Engineered to work within sub-freezing temperatures the Velar’s flush door handles extend when the driver approaches the vehicle. Inside the cabin, its immaculate lines and all-new glass cockpit system for displays and control is reminiscent of that you would find in the cockpit of a G650 or new Airbus A350. The dual-screen infotainment system and its smart minimalist dashboard, complete with plenty of leather and soft-touch trim. presented a command system steeped in luxury. The sliding panoramic glass roof allowed light to flood the cabin by day. In the a selection of 3 power trains, two turbocharged V4’s and supercharged V6 are offered.

The D180 diesel four makes 180 hp and 317 lb-ft of torque, while the P250 gasoline four makes 247 hp and 269 lb-ft. Finally, the P380 supercharged V6 makes 380 hp and 332 lb-ft. All are mated to ZF eight-speed automatics, and come with all-wheel drive standard towing capacities over 5,000 pounds. The Velar is now the fourth Range Rover model that completes a stellar lineup. With this new Velar, Range Rover debuts the brands latest performance and styling innovations that will set the new standard for the Range Rover brand. Range Rover Velar.
