In the ever-evolving world of Mini, the Mini Cooper S E Countryman All4 plug-in hybrid is meeting consumer demands with distinct Mini flair. Long the car of the young and active the new Clubman keeps the fun factor on high while adding room for your friends and their things. From weekend getaways to the draining demands of stop and go city traffic the new Mini Cooper S E Countryman All4 plug-in hybrid is an gas saving cocoon of comfort, style and economy. A win-win.
The Mini Cooper S E Countryman All4 plug-in hybrid combines the three-cylinder engine, the six-speed automatic, and an electric motor that operates on the rear wheels to achieve output of 221 horsepower and 284 lb-ft of torque. Under the best of conditions, the hybrid can travel a maximum of 24 miles solely on electric power and can reach 77 mph. Recharging the lithium-ion batteries at a 3.6-kilowatt wall box takes just over two hours. Charging it using a standard 110-volt household outlet will take a bit longer. “The plug-in hybrid concept perfectly matches the new MINI Countryman because it offers intelligent all-wheel drive as well as being able to run on electricity alone both in urban areas and over longer distances.
This is unique in the segment,” says Uwe Seitz, MINI Cooper S E Countryman ALL4 project manager.
A stand-out road trip feature is the MINI Cooper S E Countryman ALL4 navigation system that appropriate sections of the route to run on electric power alone then switch to gas when needed. Thanks to the compact structure and arrangement of the eDrive components, the plug-in hybrid model of the new MINI Countryman has a versatile interior with the battery housed underneath the slightly raised rear seat. The luggage compartment volume in the Mini Cooper S E Countryman All4 plug-in hybrid is only slightly less than in the conventionally powered Countryman. “The entire hybrid technology is installed in such a way that you don’t notice it inside the car at all,” says Uwe Seitz, MINI Cooper S E Countryman ALL4 project manager, “with the exception of the controls used to activate the various driving modes.”
Discreet yet equally unmistakable are the model-specific design features on the MINI Cooper S E Countryman ALL4 exterior. The connection for the charging cable is under a flap in the area of the left-hand side scuttle. Other features are the model-specific “e” badge on the side scuttles and also a yellow “S” in the model inscription on the rear as well as on the radiator grill and door sill finishers.
The features we love inside are the yellow start/stop unit at the centre of the toggle switch panel and a performance display in the instrument cluster on the steering column. The displays features information such as the charge state of the high-voltage battery and operating mode of the hybrid drive selected by eDrive toggle switch. In our test Mini we had an 8.8-inch screen with a new graphic design and touchscreen function as well as controls via the Touch Controller in the centre console. All in all a very cool, win-win, ride. Mini Cooper S E Countryman All4 plug-in hybrid.
